The GL1800 cockpit is a half-inch narrower than those of its ancestors, and is much easier on the eyes. The left-hand switch pod's audio controls are an ergonomic miracle. A single button in the right-hand pod, next to the cruise controls, cues the electric reverse gear. Upper dash vents, however, admit very little air.

Thanks to some crafty antishock countermeasures, the optional Panasonic CD changer ($1092) hiding in the trunk never skipped a beat in nearly 3000 miles of cross-country hammering. Loading discs is much easier than the old magazine system BMW uses on its K1200LT, but you'll have to unload the trunk to cue up fresh discs.

Release an under-trunk latch and hydraulic struts make sure the saddlebags open smoothly. Honda claims 40 liters of capacity per side, though we found less usable space than on the GL1500's bags. Fit and finish of the bags were good, though they occasionally require a determined fist to close.

With the GL stripped of its 36 painted parts, it's easy to see how far forward the engine is positioned; side-mounted radiators help with packaging, all of which helps the Wing handle convincingly sportbikelike. When the auxiliary cooling fans kick on below 15 mph, hot air blows forward under the headlight instead of onto the rider.

GL1000
The face that launched a half-million land yachts was built as a forward-thinking cruise missile. Introduced at the 1974 Cologne show, the GL1000 hit American showrooms in 1975. Despite decent engine performance, Honda sold just 5000 GLs that year. Suggested retail: $2899 (west), $2881 (east).

Although the GL was available in naked form for $3798, the 1980 Interstate attracted attention as the first Japanese tourer available with a fairing, saddlebags and trunk standard. Air suspension at both ends was a first in 1980, as was electronic ignition. Suggested retail: $4898.

Surprised by Yamaha's 1983 Venture V4, Honda gave the third-generation, 1182cc flat four hydraulic lifters and a new 16-inch front wheel--followed by a 15-inch rear--to speed up handling. Still, it wasn't enough, because the Venture waxed the stodgy Wing (in all ways) again in '84. Suggested retail: $6195.

Slow sales killed the naked Wing for 1985. These were the '80s, and too much was just right. Enter the GL1200 Limited Edition, powered by a fuel-injected 1182cc flat four with self-leveling suspension, a four-speaker audio/intercom system and an electronic trip computer. Suggested retail: $10,000.

Honda's 1520cc six instantly reduced luxury motorcycle touring to a class of one. From supreme air management and seat comfort to power and handling, nothing on two wheels was even in the same zip code. It was also the first motorcycle you could put in reverse. Suggested retail: $9998.

Just when it seemed the Wing had gone soft enough to give BMW's sporty K1200LT a shot, Honda counters with an 898-pound GL1800 that out-torques anything on two wheels and out-handles anything with saddlebags. Suggested retail: $17,499.
