Isle Of Man Adventure

A year ago, Mark Gardiner quit his job, sold everything he owned and moved to the Isle of Man with two goals: to race in the TT, and to write a book that would answer the question, "Why race motorcycles?" What follows are excerpts from the journal he kept

Approaching Ballacraine. After five miles of long straights and flowing bends there's a 90-degree right. Here, the character of the course changes completely, as it climbs a narrow valley. It's the most beautiful--and dangerous--section of the TT.

The TT course starts and ends on Glencrutchery Road, in Douglas--the busiest road on the Island. Fans in the grandstand see each racer only every 20 minutes. They follow the action by listening to the Manx radio commentary over the loudspeakers, while Boy Scouts post each lap time on a sprawling, ramshackle plywood scoreboard. This map helps everyone keep track.

I have 15 more gears, but the climb up the Mountain is still exhausting.

Approaching the Graham Memorial, about 1500 feet above Ramsey. That's not a defibrillator on the handlebars, it's a video camera for Peter Riddihough's documentary film. The sign indicates a mountain trail reserved for hikers and joggers. There are also hundreds of miles of "green lanes," shared by enduro riders, mountain bikers, walkers and horsemen. Curiously, they all get along.

Scallop boats, Ramsey harbor. The 37-mile, 240-corner TT course climbs up and around the mountain in the background, but it's not The Mountain.... Snaefell--even higher--is hidden from view in the distance; the weather up there is often quite different than it is in Douglas. Far, right: Taking notes and drawing actual corners on paper forces you to really look at each bend and helps fix them in your memory--all of which is pretty important at speeds of well over 100 mph. Top, middle: One went to Oxford, the other apprenticed at 14 years old. A photo of two men whose lives intersect at a single point: this Velocette Venom.

Parliament Square, Ramsey. On Mad Sunday, people jam pubs and sidewalks to watch the parade of fans. On any other Sunday, it's the Battle of Britain. A squadron of locals lounge near parked sportbikes, ready to scramble for a no-speed-limit dogfight with anyone who turns right and heads off over the Mountain. Above: Race control and the grandstand, Glencrutchery Road.
