2008 Yamaha FJR Review

Yamaha introduced the FJR 1300 to Europe in 2001 and to the United States the following year, with the 2003 model. In 2008, two FJR 1300s models were sold in the United States: the 1300A and the 1300AS, sometimes known as the 1300AE. The major difference between these two models is the transmission. The FJR 1300A has a manual transmission while the 1300AS has a semi-automatic transmission. The FJR 1300AS has an electronically controlled clutch. It is the first Supersport touring motorcycle to have this feature, a process known as Chip Control Shifting. The rider can shift using a switch on the handlebar or can use the foot shifter. Both Supersport touring motorcycles are for experienced riders, due to the high center of gravity, overall weight, engine size, and speed. Riders warn that extra skill is needed when a passenger is on board.

The FJR 1300s models, with 1298 cc engines, are fast – in rider forums, posters boast of achieving speeds of more than 150 mph. This may be a reason why the FJR 1300 is used by police departments around the world, from Ireland and the United Kingdom, to Australia and the tiny Caribbean country of Trinidad and Tobago. Dash storage and hard-side cases are standard on the FJR 1300. The 2008 FJR 1300 dash storage, which can be opened only when the ignition is on, contains a 12-volt power outlet. The windshield has push-button adjustability. The instrument includes an electronic analog tachometer and speedometer, digital odometer, fuel and temperature gauge, a clock, and a variety of warning lights. It has a ""one key fits all"" system with the same key used for all keyed devices, including ignition, saddlebags and optional top case, and steering lock. Yamaha no longer sells the FJR 1300AS in the United States and Canada.
