2010 Piaggio BV Review

Intro

The Italian-manufactured Piaggio BV is a 250 cc scooter with lots going for it. Reaching speeds of up to 65 mph, this is more than just an about-town scooter. At 83.1 inches long and 29.9 inches wide at its widest point, it handles nicely on most road conditions. The 16-inch aluminum wheels help to attain that ride. The front and rear disc brakes are the perfect fit for bringing the 22 horsepower liquid-cooled engine to a stop. The engine is carbureted and requires premium fuel to keep the 11:1 compression ratio from pinging.

Its storage compartments are lacking; it has lockable under-seat storage, which barely fits a helmet and definitely not a full-faced helmet. It does have a rear rack and an under dash hook that could be used to hang or bungee your helmet on, but if you""re worried about an expensive helmet, you should look for other ways to keep it safe. The dash storage is lockable and is large enough to fit your cell, sunglasses, and even your camera. A combination of digital and analog instrumentation comes with the standard speedometer, a temperature warning light, an oil level light, a trip odometer, and a fuel level warning gauge, along with high/low beam light. Fair warning, the turns are not self-cancelling, but they at least have a right and left dash warning light to remind you of the fact, so you won’t have to be that person riding around with one turn signal on.

The seating is a two-up vinyl seat at 30.9 inches tall and is comfortable enough for a one-hour commute. The driver""s seat has a built-in backrest and a grab-rail in the rear. Both driver and passenger are treated to footboards. The driver has narrow front fairing, but you need to either be quite small or keep your legs together to benefit from it. The current trend in scooters is the Continuously Variable (CVT) transmission, making shifting a thing of the past. The BV is belt driven with an electric start. The no-shift makes this a good starter (and keeper) scooter for more than just urban riding. Look for this ride in the city, out in the country, or anywhere else you want to go.
