2010 KTM SMC Review

Intro

KTM’s 690 SMC ensures riders will be off to the races, whether around a Supermoto track or down the highway. The SMC line, introduced to the United States in 2004, was born to run. This Super Motard was designed primarily to be a race bike, but is typically used by riders for every day riding, as it is a street-legal Enduro. It looks more like a dirt bike than a traditional motorcycle. However, tradition is evident in the colors as the 690 SMC comes in the Austrian manufacturer's traditional colors of white, orange, and black, all in the same bike. The 690 SMC replaces KTM’s 660 SMC, with KTM creating the 660’s successor with improved Supermoto and state-of-the-art engine technologies. It became KTM’s only Supermoto model when it was introduced in 2008.

Highway riders report the 690 SMC rides smoothly along at 60 mph in sixth gear, with no noticeable vibration in the hand grips but some in the ankles. Excellent front brakes make it easy for experienced riders to do fun motorcycle tricks. The KTM 690 SMC is a terror on the race track, using one of the most powerful engines in Supermoto racing. When it is ridden in competition, it is used mainly in Europe. Throttle response is instantaneous in this SuperSport bike. The powder-coated chromium-molybdenum trellis frame weighs just 18 pounds. The front and rear spoked wheels have aluminum rims.
