For the 2012 model year, United States scooter manufacturer Genuine Scooters introduced four models of one of its lower-level scooters, the Genuine Scooter Co Buddy. They are the Buddy 50, Buddy 125, Buddy 170i, and Buddy Psycho. The manufacturer’s suggested retail prices for the 2012 Buddy models were $1,999, $2,799, $2,999, and $3,299, respectively.
The models of the 2012 Genuine Scooter Co Buddy are mainly distinguished by their air-cooled single-cylinder engines. The Buddy 50, true to its two-digit suffix, has a two-stroke engine that displaces at 50 cubic centimeters (cc). The four-stroke engine on the Buddy 125 and Buddy Psycho displaces at 125 cc. The Buddy 170i engine, also a four-stroke unit, displaces at 168 cc.
The 2012 Buddy 50 engine uses a reed intake valve configuration; each of the other models has two valves on the engine’s lone cylinder. Unlike the other models, which use a carburetor for fueling, the Buddy 170i relies on fuel injection for its engine. Paired with each engine on the 2012 Buddy is a Continuously Variable Transmission, which shifts through an infinite number of effective gear ratios for greater fuel economy performance. The Buddy 50 is the most fuel efficient, providing up to 100 miles per gallon (mpg); the other models provide up to 90 mpg.
For its stopping ability, each 2012 Genuine Scooter Co Buddy uses a front hydraulic disc brake and a rear drum brake. The suspension on the scooter comprises a telescopic fork at the front and a single-sided swing arm with a shock absorber at the back. Each 2012 Buddy rides on ten-inch steel wheels and tubeless tires.
Built with a steel frame for sturdiness, the 2012 Genuine Scooter Co Buddy has the standard front and rear fenders, as well as a center stand for parking. The one-piece vinyl seat on the scooter can accommodate up to two people. For standard digital instrumentation, the 2012 Buddy has a trip odometer, speedometer, and fuel level warning gauge. Storage consists of under-seat and lockable compartments, s dashboard box, and an area for hanging the helmet. A power outlet is included for charging mobile devices, and a halogen headlight and pair of side mirrors are provided for heightened visual perception during driving.
The 2012 Genuine Scooter Co Buddy does not break new ground, since it is essentially the same scooter from past model years. However, Genuine Scooters did a good job in not tinkering with the formula, as the 2012 Buddy is overall a decent ride.
