2009 KYMCO People 50

Intro

The 2009 Kymco People is a scooter that Taiwanese automaker Kwang Yang Motor Co, Ltd. (Kymco.) brought for the 2009 model year. Representing the fourth model year for the bike, the Kymco People was designed as a more-bang-for-the-buck machine, with Kymco reducing the price to make it more accessible for public use. The 2009 version is split into three versions: the People 50, People 150, and People 250.

Like other scooters with numerical suffixes, the models of the 2009 Kymco People are named after their engine displacement. The two-stroke single-cylinder engine on the People 50 has a displacement of 49 cubic centimeters, or cc (rounded up to 50). The four-stroke one on the People 150 has a displacement of 152cc (rounded down to 150). The engine on the People 250 – also a four-stroke single-cylinder unit like the People 150 – has the highest displacement, at 249cc (rounded up to 250).

The engines on the 2009 Kymco People 50 and 150 have an air cooler, which was introduced for the purpose of cooling down the unit and consequently preventing malfunction from overheating. The People 250 uses a water cooler instead of an air-based one. Also included are an electric starter and Keihin carburetor for rapid ignition, especially during cold days, and a muffler with exhaust catalyst technology for reducing air pollution.

The 2009 Kymco People engine is paired with a continuously variable transmission (CVT). The gearbox gets its name from its ability to shift through infinite gear ratios: an ability that sets it apart from other transmissions. As a result, the engine runs more efficiently and provides better fuel economy. However, peak fuel capacity and fuel economy vary according to model. Peak fuel capacity is measured at 1.5 gallons (g) for the People 50, 1.8 g for the People 150, and 2.1 g for the People 250. Fuel economy is estimated at 88 miles per gallon (mpg) for the People 50, 84 mpg for the People 150, and 70 mpg for the People 250.

The 2009 Kymco People has a wide variety of exterior finishes. The People 50 comes in Black/Ivory, Blue/Ivory, and Wineberry. The People 150 adds Green/White and Silver color scheme options, while the People 250 is only available in Wine or Grey. Standard features on the scooter include halogen headlights; rearview mirrors; exhaust guard; rear rack; under-seat, helmet and glove box/dash storage; and huge 16-inch aluminum wheels. Included on the dashboard are an analog speedometer, odometer, fuel gauge indicator, and digital clock. Added on the People 250 is a cell phone accessory plug. A front-disc rear-drum configuration provides the scooter’s braking.

The 2009 Kymco People’s physical measurements include a length range of around 72 to 76 inches, width of around 27 inches and height of around 42 inches, with a wheelbase range of 50 to 60 inches. The one-piece vinyl seat, built for only the driver to occupy, is set at 31 inches high. The dry weight of the scooter is estimated at 183 lbs.

The manufacturer’s suggested retail price (MSRP) of the 2009 Kymco People varies according to model. The People 50 is the least expensive version, with an MSRP of $1,999. True to its mid-range status, the People 150 has an MSRP of $2,799. The People 150 is the most expensive of the three models, with an MSRP of $3,999.
