2009 Kawasaki ER-6n Base

Intro

The 2009 Kawasaki ER-6n is a naked bike with an excellent balance of agility, style, and power. Although originally introduced as a beginner bike, experienced riders will appreciate the effort and thought the engineers at Kawasaki have given this fine machine.

A four-stroke, liquid-cooled, dual overhead cam (DOHC), four-valve per cylinder, 649cc, parallel twin engine powers the 2009 Kawasaki ER-6n. The 48.5 lb-ft of torque provides powerful acceleration from low RPM city traffic, up to full-on highway speeds. Furthermore, digital fuel injection with two 38mm Keihin throttle bodies provides smooth throttle response along the entire power band.

Vibration of the inline twin has been greatly reduced by not only using a balance shaft, but also through the addition of the upper-rear engine mount being damped by rubber bushings. The rubber-covered foot pegs and rubber-mounted handlebars inhibit vibration to such an extent, that the rider suffers very little trembling and tends to remain very comfortable while on the Kawasaki ER.

Power on the 2009 Kawasaki ER is transferred to the wheels via a six-speed manual transmission, with an O-ring chain final drive. Kawasaki has engineered the transmission in such a way that the neutral position is much easier to get into and out of, and is dubbed the ""neutral finder."" This added feature will be appreciated by beginning riders, and even the experienced will notice the degree to which less physical effort is required during normal operation.

Pot holes, bumps, and uneven surfaces are smoothed out by the 41mm hydraulic telescopic fork with 4.7 inches of wheel travel in the front, and the single offset laydown shock with adjustable spring preload, with 4.9 inches of wheel travel in the rear. Agile and stable navigation into and out of the curves is due in part to this dynamic suspension setup.

The 2009 Kawasaki ER-6n uses the same steel-trellis narrow frame as the Ninja 650R, ergonomically shaped for a tight and balanced rider seating position. The 24.5-degree rake angle provides a comfortable yet mildly aggressive vantage point. Even entry-level riders will be able to tame the bike on the curviest of mountain roads, thanks to the Dunlop Roadsmart tires employed by the Kawasaki for the ER-6n. In front, the 2009 ER-6n uses a sporty 120/70 tire, 17 inches in diameter, while in the rear, a rather narrow 160/60 17-inch tire is used. Kawasaki has given the ER-6n a very responsive braking system via the dual 300mm petal disc brake with a two-piston caliper in front and a single 220mm petal disc with hydraulic caliper in the rear.

Both new and experienced riders will find the fit and finish of the Kawasaki ER-6n to their liking. Kawasaki has given the ER-6n four tie-down points under the tail for storage. Under the seat, there is a space for locking devices or other small items. Bright LED taillights aid visibility, which is a priority for riders of any kind. Grab rails are large, giving passengers a comfortable and stable seating position. The instrument panel of the Kawasaki ER-6n is large and prominently placed directly between the handlebars. The mixed digital and analog display includes a clock, fuel gauge, and dual trip meters. The white-faced speedometer is analog and easy to read at a glance. Kawasaki has given its naked bike a bit of flair in choosing the vibrant Candy Plasma Blue color and extending it to the matching shock spring. The smooth texture and brilliant finish of the frame and swing arm add to the feeling of quality on this entry-level motorcycle.
