2009 Harley-Davidson Road King Classic

Intro

Over the years, Harley-Davidson has developed what is possibly the most loyal and orthodox fan base of all motorcycle customers. The Harley-Davidson Road King debuted in 1994 as a touring bike with classic 1950s styling, and although the 2009 version has been updated, on the surface, the bike maintains the looks that won so many hearts the first time around.

The 2009 Harley-Davidson Road King Touring models are powered by the Twin Cam 96 V-Twin engine with Electronic Throttle Control (ETC), joined to the six-speed Cruise Drive belt-driven transmission. The 1584cc engine produces 92.60 lb-ft of torque, making both urban and highway rides a pleasure. The Electronic Sequential Port Fuel Injection (ESPFI), combined with the 54/35 highway/city fuel economy, gives the Road King Classic a long range from the six gallon fuel tank. An all-new single-piece welded exhaust header features a 2-into-1-into-2 design and new routing, to reduce both rider and passenger discomfort. The rear pipe has been redesigned to flow better with the transmission. Acceleration is improved on all 2009 Road King Touring models due to a lower final drive ratio, as a 68-tooth rear sprocket replaces the previous 66-tooth sprocket. The isolated Drive System has been retooled, and the compensator is now integrated into the rear wheel hub.

The air adjustable telescopic fork is traditionally chrome plated, while the rear end features a newly designed twin-sided steel swing arm. Twin rear shock absorbers allow adjustments to rebound damping, and both shock and spring preload. The upgraded suspension system can be depended on for a more comfortable time in the saddle, while still being stiff and accurate at speed. The new engine isolation system keeps vibration to a minimum, while the newly designed frame and swing arm allows for an improved layout, and added rigidity.

The cockpit of the 2009 Harley-Davidson Road King is a wide and comfortable affair. The one-piece leather saddle features two seats, each with a 26.9 inch seat height. Flanking each side of the rear wheel are twin leather side cases. Standard lockable storage makes time on the road both safe and secure. The classic styling includes full-length floorboards, and a detachable Lexan windshield. Mounted on the fuel tank is a large speedometer, allowing the rider to easily see the instrument panel, while the wide chrome handlebars place the rider in a comfortable upright riding position.

The 16-inch front chromed laced steel wheel is wrapped in Dunlop 130/80 whitewall rubber. In the rear, a 16-inch classically laced chromed wheel sits on a Dunlop 180/65 whitewall tire. Slowing down the 775-pound cruiser is handled by Brembo triple disc brakes, in both the front and rear. Anti-lock brakes are also available as an option.

The list of available accessories from Harley-Davidson is extensive, with something to suit almost every possible need or situation. Multiple color schemes are available, along with paint kits. A chrome four-channel luggage rack extends the storage capacity, along with tour-paks, handlebar bags, and sissy bars, to make long days on the road comfortable. Almost every piece of the bike is interchangeable, from the foot pegs, to the handgrips, to the seat. Lastly, a factory security system is available to protect your classic ride.
