The 2008 Big Dog Ridgeback is a chopper-style motorcycle that now-defunct Kansas-based Big Dog Motorcycles, LLC manufactured for the 2008 model year. Instead of modifying it from an original bike design – thus the term ""chopped"" – Big Dog constructed the Ridgeback to give it the stretched front end distinctive of choppers. The 2008 Ridgeback was the top-level chopper from Big Dog in 2008, and its manufacturer's suggested retail price is $28,400.
The engine on each 2008 Big Dog Ridgeback is a four-stroke two-cylinder unit called a V-twin (due to the cylinders shaped like the letter ""V""). Four valves are placed on each engine cylinder. The Ridgeback engine displaces at 1,916 cubic centimeters, has a compression ratio of 9.6 to 1, and possesses a bore and stroke of 4.13 by 4.38 inches. An air cooler is employed for cooling down the engine’s hotter parts and prevents malfunction via overheating. Also included are an S&S Super G carburetor and electric starter for quick ignition, especially for colder days. A six-speed manual transmission is paired with the engine.
For braking and handling, the 2008 Big Dog Ridgeback relies on all-wheel disc brakes, which are superior to front-disc rear-drum set-ups; and a telescopic-fork front suspension and rigid rear suspension. A 21-inch aluminum wheel goes up front and a smaller 17-inch one goes to the back, both fitted with tubeless tires.
Built with a steel frame and possessing front and rear fenders, the 2008 Big Dog Ridgeback is designed as a sturdy yet stylish bike. For seating, a one-piece leather seat – set at a height of around 24 inches – provides enough room for the driver. The chopper also comes with digital instrumentation, which consists of a tachometer, speedometer, and trip odometer. Also included on the 2008 Ridgeback are halogen headlights for exterior lighting and rearview mirrors for enhanced visibility.
Each 2008 Big Dog Ridgeback is 107 inches (or almost 9 feet) in length, with a wheelbase or around 82.5 inches and 4.5-inch ground clearance. The chopper’s dry weight is measured at 259 lbs. in the front and 421 lbs. at the back for a total of 680 lbs. The maximum operating weight/mass of the 2008 Ridgeback – or gross vehicle weight rating – consists of 390 lbs. in the front and 695 lbs. at the back.
