2007 Vento Phantera

2007 Vento Phantera Base

Intro

Vento, an international company headquartered in San Diego, California, began producing motorcycles and scooters in 1996; within 10 years it had design and development teams based in China, Italy, and Australia, as well as California. The company initially made a splash building a dealer presence in the U.S. before switching to the strictly mail-order business model typical of many Chinese scooter makers.

Vento produced two models of the 2007 Phantera step-through scooter, the base and the GT5, which the company introduced in 2005 and carried over for the next few years. Both are 150cc, air-cooled, four-stroke, single-cylinder machines with OHV configurations. With 9.4 bph and 6.3 lb-ft of torque, the Phantom is powerful enough to handle short jaunts on the freeway, but it is not designed for highway cruising by any means. Unfortunately, Vento does not offer any estimates of average fuel economy, so there’s no way of telling how far you’ll get on the 1.4 gallons of premium gas that the tank, on both models, holds.

Both the base and GT5 Phantera come with belt-driven continuously variable transmissions. A telescopic fork provides the front suspension, and the rear suspension is a double-sided steel swing arm. Braking power comes from a hydraulic disc in front and a rear drum for both models. The scooters ride on 13-inch aluminum wheels and 130 tires.

The frame on both models is steel; the standard bodywork includes front and rear fenders, a side cover, and upper fairing. The standard windshield is a nice—and uncommon—feature. A center stand is also standard. Paint options for the base are gray, red, and yellow; the GT5 comes in black only. The 34.8-inch-high, one-piece vinyl seat is stepped for the driver and passenger; both riders keep their feet on the floorboard; there are no foot pegs for a passenger.

The Phantera’s digital instrument panel has a couple of unusual features: Along with the standard fuel gauge, speedometer, and odometer, it has a tachometer and an alarm system. Both models feature a surprising amount of standard storage, along with the lockable under-seat storage and glove box, the scooters come with hard side cases and a color-matched rear rack.

With a dry weight of 229 pounds and a total length of almost 75 inches, the sporty-looking Phantera is maneuverable and relatively easy to handle. It’ll fit into tight parking spaces and is suitable for urban commuting or taking out on flat country roads.
