2007 United Motors Xpeed 250i

United Motors, an international company with offices in Florida, imported and rebadged Jincheng motorcycles from China and Hyosung scooters from South Korea. United Motors’ American operations went out of business in 2010, though the company continued to distribute Korean and Chinese motorcycles in South America. In 2007 United Motors added a rebadged Hyosung scooter to its Xpeed scooters, calling it the Xpeed 250 i. Its other Xpeed scooter, the 50R, was a carryover for 2007.

Both models are step-through scooters, but that’s the extent of the similarities. The Xpeed 50R has an air-cooled, 49cc, single-cylinder two-stroke engine with a reed valve configuration. It has a Mikuni carburetor and an electric starter backed up with a kick starter. The 250 i is powered by a liquid-cooled, 249cc, single-cylinder four-stroke engine with a dual overhead cam valve configuration. It has fuel injectors and an electric starter; an engine immobilizer is standard. Both machines have the continuously variable transmission that is the norm in scooters, as well as belt final drives. The 50R has drum brakes in front and back, sufficient to stop its 209 pounds; the 250i, which weighs 360 pounds and has power enough for short highway jaunts, has dual disc brakes in front and a single disc in back. Both have telescopic forks in front; the 50R has a single swing arm and the 250 i a twin-sided swing arm providing rear suspension.

The bigger, more powerful scooter has lockable underseat storage as well as dash storage for small items, but no racks—in fact, there are no optional accessories at all. The 50R has underseat and dash storage, plus a rear rack.

Reliability seems to have been a serious problem with the 50R, and since United Motors has closed its doors, buyers can expect no dealer support and may find it difficult to locate replacement parts. Because the 250 i is a Hyosung machine, the South Korean manufacturer’s parts continue to be available.
