Now discontinued, the SD was a scooter from South Korea-headquartered Hyosung Motors. Although not the strongest offering available for its model year –
especially when compared with offerings from Honda, Yamaha and Kymco – the 2006 edition of the Hyosung SD admirably offers the most common standard features in the scooter market.
With a manufacturer’s suggested retail price of $1,399, Hyosung offers only one model: the 2006 SD 50. The three-digit suffix stands for its engine displacement, which is 49 cubic centimeters (rounded up to 50 cc). The engine powering the 2006 Hyosung SD is a two-stroke air-cooled single-cylinder that generates 4.3 horsepower at 6,750 revolutions per minute (RPM) and 3.4 pound-feet of torque at 6,750 RPM. The bore and stroke of the engine is 1.62 by 1.47 inches (41 by 37.4 millimeters), and at place is a 14-millimeter Mikuni carburetor that blends fuel and air for the unit. Riders can use the convenient electric ignition or the manual kick starter for starting the motorcycle.
Each engine on the 2006 Hyosung SD is paired with a Continuous Variable Transmission, or CVT. An automatic gearbox, the CVT can shift through an infinite number of effective gears. This enables the engine to run more efficiently and consequently improve the scooter’s fuel economy. Each 2006 Hyosung SD gets considerable range, with a gas tank of 1.3 gallons (4.8 liters).
The 2006 Hyosung SD is constructed with a steel frame; adorned with an exhaust guard, front and rear fender, and lower fairing; and rides on 10-inch steel wheels. The scooter is available as a blue or yellow item. A center stand is provided for parking, and the one-piece vinyl seat on top of the scooter is big enough for the driver and one passenger. Storage on the '06 Hyosung SD includes a rear rack; and an under-seat, lockable and helmet compartment or area. Also included are a pair of rearview mirrors and a halogen headlight.
For braking, the 2006 Hyosung SD uses a front disc brake and a rear drum brake. This gives it greater braking prowess over scooters with all-wheel drum brake layouts. Its suspension – consisting of a telescopic fork at the front and single-sided swing arm at the back – is implemented for absorbing bumps during rougher rides.
Each 2006 Hyosung SD has a length of 70.1 inches (1,780 millimeters), width of 26 inches (660 millimeters) and height of 42 inches (1,065 millimeters), with a wheelbase of 48.1 inches (1,221 millimeters). The ground clearance and seat height are measured at 5.3 inches (135 millimeters) and 29.8 inches (756 millimeters). The dry weight of the 2006 Hyosung SD is 174.2 lbs. (79 kilograms).
Perhaps because of its focus on budget pricing and similarities with other scooters of its class, the 2006 Hyosung SD has been overshadowed by similar scooters, which include the Yamaha Vino, Honda Ruckus, Piaggio Typhoon and Kymco ZX. While the aforementioned scooters are arguably stronger offerings, the differences between them and the 2006 Hyosung SD are far from significant. Indeed, the comparatively low price of the SD makes it a very attractive buy.
