2006 Big Dog Chopper Base

Custom choppers have been growing in popularity over the past two decades. With multiple reality television shows showcasing custom builds, the market for custom choppers has been expanding every year. Founded in 1994, Big Dog motorcycles were one of the first boutique motorcycle companies to get in on the custom chopper craze. Their limited edition factory custom choppers have been an industry leader now for almost two decades. The 2006 Big Dog Chopper represents an iconic custom chopper design that attracts attention wherever you ride it.

The 2006 Big Dog Chopper’s design will turn heads. With a very low seating position, long narrow gas tank, and a large 37-degree rake that places the front wheel well in front of the frame, the Big Dog Chopper epitomizes the image many people have when they think custom chopper. The Big Dog Chopper’s low stance and long 77-inch wheelbase give it a formidable look on the road. Chromed rims and chromed engine parts complete the aesthetic styling on the Big Dog Chopper, giving it a unique look that is sure to turn heads.

On a bike weighing almost 700 pounds fully loaded, a lot of power is needed to get the Chopper moving. S&S/Big Dog’s staple 1,916cc air-cooled V-twin engine powers the 2006 Chopper. Producing around 82 horsepower and 95 lb-ft of torque, the Big Dog Chopper has a smoother acceleration curve from the stoplight to the highway. The Baker 6-Speed manual transmission is standard on Big Dog motorcycles, and high-quality shifting is important when you have 700 pounds of custom chrome riding beneath you. By mating a primary chain drive to a belt driven final drive, the 2006 Chopper achieves smooth shifting through all gears.

Controlling a heavy bike like the Big Dog Chopper might seem to be a daunting task with clever engineering, Big Dog makes the job easier for riders. By keeping the seat height low, not only does the Big Dog Chopper have the definitive chopper riding position, but it also serves to keep a low center of gravity, which improves control. Handlebars are positioned a comfortable distance from the rider at shoulder length, to ensure easy handling. Big Dog also uses a modern telescopic fork on the front suspension, and hidden shocks on the rear, to enable a smooth ride while maintaining the rigid aggressive chopper look.

With such a heavy bike and powerful engine, braking ability becomes essential. Big Dog uses a proven set-up with Performance Machine four-piston caliper brakes. Differential bore calipers that use smaller pistons up front, with larger pistons in the rear, increase braking performance and endow the Big Dog Chopper with reliable stopping power.

The 2006 Big Dog Chopper rides on massive tires, using a 21-inch wheel in front, and an 18-inch wheel in rear. The MH90 front tire and 250/40 rear tire ensure that riders of the 700-pound chopper will have maximum balance when riding on winding roads.

Cockpit ergonomics on the Big Dog Chopper are surprisingly comfortable for a bike that uses such non-standard rake and trail. The low riding seat allows riders of any height to reach the ground with ease, while the handlebars are well placed for a variety of rider sizes. Big Dog places also the instrument panel in a position that makes it easy to read and understand.

While choppers with a large angle rake might not be for everyone, for those riders attracted to such unique bikes, the Big Dog Chopper makes an excellent choice for both attracting plenty of attention, and cruising down scenic routes on the weekends.
