2005 Vento Phantom

2005 Vento Phantom r4i

Vento was an international company based in San Diego, California that began producing motorcycles and scooters in 1996 at their production facilities in Mexico. They quickly switched to a facility in Texas to up their reliability standards. Within ten years, they had design and development teams based in China, Italy, and Australia. The start-up company sold at dealerships across America, and shortly after switched to a strictly mail-order business model typical of many Chinese scooter makers. By 2008, they were out of business.

The Phantom r4i is a carryover model and is powered by an air-cooled, four-stroke, single-cylinder engine with fuel injection, with an OHV valve configuration. It has a CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission), rendering the need to learn how to shift with a clutch obsolete. Telescoping forks provide the front suspension, and the rear is a double-sided steel swing arm. With 9.4 bph and 6.3 lb-ft of torque, the Phantom has just enough power to handle highway travel, but not quite enough to get you up to the constant 55 mph required for freeway and expressway riding, unless it's all downhill. While its advertised as having a 150 cc engine, its specs read closer to 125 cc.

Instrumentation is digital and includes some nice features. For example, in addition to the standard fuel gauge, speedometer, and odometer, it has an alarm system. With the CVT, the need for a tachometer is non-existent, so don't look for one. It does have a remote folding key integrated with the alarm, and a remote start.

The standard storage for both models includes a glove box, lockable under-seat storage, locking side storage, and a rear rack. Vento specifically mentions that the Phantom r4i has helmet storage, but an added helmet box is also available as an add-on.

The color options are combinations of graphite with Lemon Yellow, Atomic Blue, Cool Red, or Ultra Orange. The frame on both models is steel. The standard bodywork includes front and rear fenders, locking side covers, and upper fairing. A center stand is also standard. The 34.8-inch-high, one-piece, two-tone vinyl seat is stepped for driver and passenger (the passenger seat comes in the contrasting ""graphite"" color), and both riders have floorboard options.

With a dry weight of 229 pounds, a total length of almost 75 inches, and a height of 45 inches, it is maneuverable and relatively easy to handle. It’s a perfect fit for snug parking spaces, and is a good choice for urban commuting or riding on flat country roads. Parts may be difficult to find due to the demise of the Vento brand, but if you can determine who manufactured the part you need, you can probably buy it directly from that manufacturer.
