Lost in the sea of scooters released in the 2005 model year was the Kymco Filly from Taiwanese manufacturer Kwang Yang Motor Co, Ltd. (Kymco). Officially known as the Kymco Filly 50, the scooter had a manufacturer’s suggested retail price of $1,899.
Each 2005 Kymco Filly is powered by a four-stroke, air-cooled, single-cylinder engine, which has two intake valves on the cylinder and generates 2.6 pound-feet of torque at 6,000 revolutions per minute. It has a bore and stroke of 39 x 41.4 millimeters (1.54 x 1.63 inches) and a compression ratio of 10.5 to 1. A carburetor fuels the engine, which can be ignited using the scooter’s electric starter or kick starter. Paired with the 2005 Filly engine is a Continuously Variable Transmission, which chooses from an infinite number of gear ratios for enhanced operation of the engine and consequent increase of fuel economy. Each 2005 Filly has a gas tank with a peak capacity of 1.6 gallons (6.1 liters).
The 2005 Kymco Filly has disc brakes at the front and drum brakes at the back. While it is not as effective as an all-wheel disc brake set-up in terms of stopping power, the front-disc-brake rear-drum-brake system trumps an all-wheel drum brake one. The suspension on the 2005 Filly consists of a telescopic fork and a twin-sided swing arm with shock absorber; the set-up is for absorbing bumps on rougher terrain and generally promoting a smooth ride. Each scooter gets 10-inch aluminum wheels and tubed tires.
Kymco used a steel frame for the 2005 Filly for its sturdiness, and then adorned it with front and rear fenders, and an exhaust guard for protecting scooter riders from possible harm. On top of the scooter is a one-piece vinyl seat that provides enough room for the driver and a passenger. A center stand provides the 2005 Filly with parking.
The digital instrumentation on the 2005 Kymco Filly consists of a clock, trip odometer, speedometer and fuel level warning gauge. Storage space consists of a rear rack, under-seat and lockable compartments, and a place to hang the helmet. A halogen headlight and a pair of side mirrors were installed for enhanced visibility on the road.
Each 2005 Kymco Filly has a length of 67 inches (1,700.8 mm), width of 25 inches (635 mm), height of 41 inches (1,041.4 mm) and wheelbase of 47 inches (1,193.8 mm). The seat on the scooter was designed to have a height of 29 inches (736.6 mm). The dry weight of the 2005 Filly is estimated at 196 lbs. (88.9 kilograms).
The 2005 Kymco Filly is overshadowed by countless other low-level scooters either more popular in brand name or have more to offer. With its considerably low price tag, though, it might be easy for some to overlook the Filly’s overall lack of refinement.
