The 2005 Honda Ruckus – generally known as the 2005 Honda Zoomer, but marketed as the Ruckus in the United States – is the third model-year version of the scooter that Japanese automaker Honda introduced in 2002. Available as one model and now the smaller equivalent of the Big Ruckus (released the year before), the 2005 Ruckus had a manufacturer’s suggested retail price of $1,999.
Each 2005 Honda Ruckus is powered by a four-stroke, liquid-cooled, single-cylinder engine, which displaces at 49.4 cubic centimeters and uses a single overhead camshaft intake valve train. It has a bore and stroke of 1.49 x 1.73 inches (38 x 44 millimeters) and a compression ratio of 12 to 1. Fueling the engine is a 15-mm carburetor. Performance-wise, the engine pumps out 4.0 horsepower at 7,500 revolutions per minute (RPM) and 3.3 lb-ft of torque at 5,000 RPM. An electric starter at the front of the scooter is for convenient ignition.
The engine on the 2005 Honda Ruckus is paired with a Continuously Variable Transmission, or CVT, which increases engine efficiency (and by extension, fuel economy) by shifting through an unlimited number of gear ratios. With the resulting powertrain, the 2005 Ruckus has a top speed of 37 miles per hour and a fuel economy of up to 114 miles per gallon. For fuel, each scooter gets a gas tank with a peak capacity of 1.3 gallons (4.9 liters).
For braking, the 2005 Honda Ruckus relies on drum brakes on each ten-inch steel wheel. For its suspension, the scooter uses a telescopic fork and a twin-sided aluminum swing arm.
Available in a Black or Silver Camo color scheme, the 2005 Honda Ruckus uses an ideal mix of aluminum and steel to make sure its frame is neither too heavy nor insufficiently solid. Each scooter comes with the standard front and rear fenders, with a center stand for parking. A one-piece vinyl seat – set at a height of 29.1 inches (739.1 mm) – provides enough room for the driver. For digital instrumentation, each 2005 Ruckus has a trip odometer, speedometer, and temperature and fuel level warning light.
For storage, the 2005 Honda Ruckus offers a rear rack and a lockable compartment. A halogen headlight and a pair of rearview mirrors are included for enhanced visibility for the driver when on the road.
The 2005 Honda Ruckus measures 73 inches (1,860 mm) in length, 28.9 inches (735 mm) in width, and height of 40.4 inches (1,025 mm). Its wheelbase is estimated at 49.8 inches (1,264.9 mm). The weight of the scooter is measured at 181 lbs. (82.1 kilograms) dry.
More experienced riders, or those who expect more sophistication, might want to consider other options. However, for what it offers at an affordable price, the 2005 Honda Ruckus is a decent scooter, particularly for casual or entry-level drivers.
