2005 Honda Reflex Base

Intro

In retrospect, the 2005 Honda Reflex arrived at a time when the scooter had reached the half-way mark of its production run, as it was produced from 2001 to 2008. Japanese manufacturer Honda split the 2005 Reflex into two main models: the original version (Reflex Base), which has a Candy Dark Red color scheme; and the slightly enhanced Reflex Sport, which comes in a silver finish. Honda added variants of each model with an anti-lock braking system (ABS). These models are accordingly named the Reflex Base ABS and Reflex Sport ABS, respectively. The ABS variants had a manufacturer’s suggested retail price of $5,999, which was $500 more expensive than the models without ABS.

The 2005 Honda Reflex is powered by a four-stroke, air-cooled, single-cylinder engine, which displaces at 492 cubic centimeters and uses a single overhead camshaft intake valve train. Fueled by a 30-millimeter (mm) carburetor, the engine has a bore and stroke of 72.7 x 60 mm (2.86 x 2.36 inches) and compression ratio of 10.5 to 1. Completing the powertrain of the 2005 Reflex are a low-maintenance belt drive; and a Continuous Variable Transmission, which enhances fuel economy by choosing from an unlimited number of effective gear ratios. Each scooter has an electric starter for engine ignition, and a fuel tank that can hold up to 3.2 gallons (12.1 liters).

The 2005 Honda Reflex relies on an all-wheel disc brake system for its stopping power. It consists of a 9.5-inch (240-mm) dual disc at the front, and a smaller, 8.7-inch (220-mm) disc at the rear. Honda provides versions of the two models with an additional ABS for preventing the wheels from locking up when coming to a stop. Suspension on each 2005 Reflex consists of a 1.3-inch (33-mm) telescopic fork and single-sided swing arm with two rear shocks for absorbing bumps and consequently ensuring smoother rides.

Designed as a half-fairing bike, the 2005 Honda Reflex has a plastic shell covering the upper part of its solid steel frame. Added to the body are front and rear fenders, as well as a spoiler for aerodynamics. A two-piece vinyl seat with backrest provides seating for the driver and a passenger, with a pair of foot pegs for the latter. The backrest on the Reflex Sport, however, supports both driver and passenger instead of just the former, and the model has the addition of a grab rail or strap.

Digital instrumentation on the 2005 Honda Reflex consists of a clock, tachometer, trip odometer, speedometer, temperature warning and fuel level warning gauge. A windshield goes on each bike, with the one on the Sport tinted and placed at a lower position than the one on the Base. Honda added two cup holders to storage space that already constituted a glove box, under-seat and lockable compartments, and a place to keep a helmet. A halogen headlight and a pair of side mirrors are in place for enhancing visual perception when driving.

Each 2005 Honda Reflex has a wheelbase of 60.8 inches (1,544.3 mm) and a seat height of 28.3 inches (718.8 mm). The aluminum wheels on the bike measure at 12 inches at the front and 13 inches at the back. The ABS variants tend to be heavier than the regular models: at a dry weight of 379 lbs. (171.9 kilograms), compared to the 360 lbs. (163 kg).

The 2005 Honda Reflex has lots going for it. Its greatest distinction, however, is superior stopping power with the option of an ABS, a feature that is still rare in the scooter/motorcycle world. Even rarer are cup holders, perfect for keeping beverages while on the road.
