2005 Honda Gold Wing ABS

By the time the 2005 Honda Gold Wing arrived, the touring motorcycle from Japanese automaker Honda had been in production for more than three decades, and it was in the fifth year of the GL1800 production cycle. The number ""1800"" came from the rounded-down estimation of its engine displacement. Honda produced two versions of the 2005 Gold Wing: the original, or Base, model; and a version with an added anti-lock braking system, aptly called the Gold Wing ABS. The manufacturer’s suggested retail price for the 2005 Honda Gold Wing was $18,599 for the Base model and $19,699 for the ABS variant. Like the models immediately preceding it, the 2005 Honda Gold Wing is an excellent tourer, featuring a great combination of awesome power, braking and handling prowess, and a rich list of standard features not common in most motorcycles.

Each 2005 Honda Gold Wing is powered by a 40-millimeter (mm), Keihin fuel-injected, four-stroke, liquid-cooled, horizontally opposed, six-cylinder engine, which displaces at 1,832 cubic centimeters and has a grand total of 12 intake valves (two on each cylinder in a single overhead camshaft layout). It produces 118 horsepower and 125 pound-feet of torque, and it has a bore and stroke of 74 x 71 mm (2.92 x 2.8 inches) and a compression ratio of 9.8 to 1.

The engine on the 2005 Honda Gold Wing is paired with a five-speed manual transmission, with a shaft drive completing the motorcycle’s powertrain. Also included are cruise control and an electric starter with keyless ignition for convenient start-up of the bike. On each bike is a gas tank with a peak fuel capacity of 6.6 gallons (25 liters).

The 2005 Honda Gold Wing uses an all-wheel disc braking system: more effective than all-wheel drum or front-disc-brake rear-drum-brake set-ups. The system consists of an 11.7-inch (296-mm) dual disc at the front; and a larger, 12.4-inch (316-mm) single disc at the back. The Gold Wing ABS, of course, has an added anti-lock braking system for preventing the front 18-inch and rear 16-inch aluminum wheels from locking up when the brakes are applied. The suspension on the 2005 Gold Wing consists of a 1.8-inch (45-mm) telescopic fork and single-sided aluminum swing arm with rear shock absorber for promoting a smooth ride.

A full-fairing bike, the 2005 Honda Gold Wing has a plastic shell completely covering its relatively lightweight yet sturdy aluminum frame. Besides the customary front and rear fenders, the bike has a rear spoiler for aerodynamics. Drive shaft, engine case, and saddle bag guards were included to protect the Gold Wing’s vital parts or prevent them from possible harm to occupants. The 2005 Gold Wind is available in six color schemes: White, Pearl Yellow, Metallic Silver, Dark Grey Metallic, Candy Black Cherry, or Bright Blue Metallic.

On the 2005 Honda Gold Wing is a two-piece vinyl seat with backrest, providing enough space for the driver and a passenger. A center stand ensures easy parking ability. A digital dashboard provides a clock, tachometer, trip odometer, speedometer, and fuel level and temperature warning gauges. Also up front, with the digital instrumentation, are a large windshield for deflecting wind and debris, a halogen light and side mirrors for enhanced visibility on the road, and a power outlet for charging a mobile phone. Storage space consists of a rear rack, lockable compartment, a place to hang a helmet, and three hard vinyl side cases with an 18.2-gallon (80-liter) capacity. Also included on the 2005 Gold Wing is a two-speaker Panasonic intercom.

Each 2005 Honda Gold Wing has a wheelbase of 66.6 inches (1,691.6 mm), and a seat height measured at 29.1 inches (739.1 mm). Its dry weight is estimated at 792 lbs. (359.3 kilograms). The gross vehicle weight rating for the 2005 Gold Wing is 1,180 lbs. (535 kg).
