2005 Harley-Davidson Road Glide Base

Intro

The sleek, streamlined appearance of the Harley-Davidson Road Glide touring bike sets it apart from the rest of the pack. There is touring, and then there is touring from the saddle of the 2005 Road Glide.

The 2005 Harley-Davidson Road Glide is powered by the American company's classic Twin Cam 88, pushrod, V-Twin, four-stroke, 1450cc engine. The air-cooled power plant features electronic fuel injection and an electronic ignition. The 86 lb-ft of torque available at 3500 rpm give the rider the impression of power to spare, with just a twist of the wrist. The famous engine not only offers great horsepower but also gives efficient fuel economy.

The manual five-speed transmission is belt driven. It's tuned to take advantage of the torque of the Twin Cam 88 engine and to transfer that power directly to the pavement. The smooth shifting transmission and well-engineered hand controls put the rider in great control of the bike under all circumstances.

The beefy telescopic fork on the 2005 Harley-Davidson Road Glide allows 4.6 inches of wheel travel, while the twin-sided swing arm in the rear features dual adjustable shock absorbers and three inches of wheel travel. Smoothing out the rough pavement is no easy task on such a large bike; however, the suspension system offered by Harley-Davidson does a good job.

The Harley-Davidson Road Glide features seating for two, with a seat height of only 26.9 inches that sets the rider in an aggressive, yet comfortable position. Resting behind the low profile windscreen, riders are ready for the streets, as well as the highways.

Resting in the cockpit of the Road Glide is truly a pleasure, thanks to the comfortable seating and foot rests. The instrument panel provides easy-to-read functionality. The digital instrumentation offers the pilot fuel level warning information in the form of a gauge, as well as an oil pressure gauge. The standard speedometer, odometer, tachometer, and trip odometer are present, bright, and clear, leaving little need for the rider's eyes to leave the road. Electronic cruise control, along with the 40-watt per channel AM/FM/WB/CD sound system, makes long-distance travel aboard the Road Glide a pleasure. While touring away from home, additional information might be needed. This is included with gauges for diagnostic readout, volt meter, air temperature, and engine diagnostics. Optional equipment includes the Harley-Davidson security system.

Bringing the massive Harley-Davidson Road Glide to a stop under emergency situations is no easy task, but the Road Glide accomplishes this feat via large 11.5-inch dual front and single rear disc brakes. Although Anti-lock brakes are not available from Harley-Davidson for this model, there are aftermarket kits offered to upgrade the stopping power of this excellent machine.

The streamlined dual hard cases found on the rear end of the Road Glide serve both as storage and a means to hide the rear suspension system. The low-slung look is completed by the angular design of these storage units, found on both the right and left sides of the bike. Additional storage is available in the form of the tank divider. Harley-Davidson offers the 2005 Road Glide in many color options, including Vivid Black, Sierra Red Pearl, Smokey Gold Pearl, Black Cherry Pearl, Black Pearl, Chopper Blue Pearl, and Yellow Pearl. All of these colors cut a striking contrast with the chrome and stainless steel surfaces on the remainder of the bike. The broad-stripe graphics and silver powder-coated engine with chrome covers add style points. Silver brake calipers contribute to the overall fit and finish of this polished bike.
