2005 Ducati Supersport 1000 DS

Intro

When Italian manufacturer Ducati began production on the 2005 model year of the SuperSport, the sport touring bike was approaching the end of its two-decade run. Virtually unchanged from the previous year, the 2005 SuperSport was split into two models: the SuperSport 800 and the SuperSport 1000 DS. Ducati set the manufacturer’s suggested retail price at $7,995 for the 800 model and $10,995 for the 1000 DS model.

Powering the 2005 Ducati SuperSport is a four-stroke air-cooled L-twin Desmodromic engine, with two intake valves on each of its two cylinders and fueling provided by a 45-millimeter (mm) Marelli injector. The engine on the SuperSport 800 model displaces 803 cubic centimeters, and generates 77 horsepower at 8,250 revolutions per minute (RPM) and 54 pound-feet (lb-ft) of torque at 6,500 RPM. The engine on the SuperSport 1000 DS has a displacement of 992 cubic centimeters, and pumps 95 horsepower at 7,750 RPM and 70 lb-ft of torque at 5,750 RPM.

Each engine on the 2005 Ducati SuperSport is mated to a six-speed manual transmission. The gas tank on each bike can hold up to 4.2 gallons (16.0-liter) of fuel, with a one-gallon (4.0-liter) reserve. Ducati recommends premium fuel for the engine’s optimal performance.

The 2005 Ducati SuperSport relies on Brembo® disc brakes that consist of a front 12.6-inch (320-mm) dual disc and a rear 9.7-inch (245-mm) single disc. The suspension on the bike consists of a 1.7-inch (43-mm) Showa® inverted fork at the front and an Ohlins® twin-sided aluminum swing arm with rear shock absorber at the back. Ducati installed large, 17-inch aluminum wheels on the 2005 SuperSport.

Available as a red or yellow bike, the 2005 Ducati SuperSport uses a solid steel frame. Ducati designed it as a full-fairing motorcycle, with front and rear fenders, exterior covering, and a rear spoiler to complement its sport orientation. Standard digital instrumentation on the bike includes a clock, speedometer, tachometer, trip odometer, service reminder indicator, and fuel level and temperature warning lights.

Storage on the 2005 Ducati SuperSport consists of under-seat and lockable compartments. An engine immobilizer serves as the bike’s security system, and a tinted windshield is in place for protection against gushing wind and flying debris. A halogen headlight and a pair of rearview mirrors are included for greater visual perception when driving.

Each 2005 Ducati SuperSport bike measures 80 inches (2,033 mm) in length, 30.7 inches (780 mm) in width, and 43.7 inches (1,110 mm) in height. However, the SuperSport 1000 DS model, at 396 lbs. (179.4 kilograms), is heavier than the SuperSport 800 model, which has a dry weight of 386 lbs. (175 kg).

For SuperSport shoppers, it is always advisable to go with one of the later versions. The 2005 Ducati SuperSport is one of them. With increased engine power, it bears a marginal improvement over the previous model year as one of the more refined entries of the now-defunct nameplate.
