The 2005 Big Dog Ridgeback was one of the choppers that Big Dog Motorcycles – a now-defunct manufacturer that was based in Kansas – released for the 2005 model year. With a manufacturer’s suggested retail price of $26,500, the Ridgeback was one of the higher-level templates from Big Dog for 2005.
Powering each 2005 Big Dog Ridgeback is a four-stroke air-cooled engine from S&S Cycle. It is a massive engine, displacing at a hefty 1,916 cubic centimeters. It is classified as a V-twin engine, since its two cylinders are ""V""-shaped. Four intake valves go on each cylinder; thus the engine has eight valves in total. Each engine on the 2005 Ridgeback has a bore and stroke of 4.13 x 4.38 inches (104.8 x 111.1 millimeters) and a 9.6-to-1 compression ratio.
A Super G carburetor, also from S&S Cycle, fuels the 2005 Big Dog Ridgeback engine. Linked with the engine is an electric starter for convenient ignition. A six-speed manual transmission is standard on the 2005 Ridgeback. For fuel, each chopper gets a 4.5-gallon (17-liter) gas tank, with a 0.5-gallon (1.9-liter) reserve.
Each 2005 Big Dog Ridgeback uses all-wheel disc brakes for its stopping power; it is more effective than front-disc-brake rear-disc-brake or all-wheel drum layouts. A front 1.6-inch (41-mm) telescopic fork and rear rigid suspension ensures a smooth and controlled ride when on the chopper. The 2005 Ridgeback has a 21-inch aluminum wheel at the front and an 18-inch aluminum wheel at the back. Both wheels are fitted with tubeless tires.
Made of solid steel – and dressed up with a belt guard, side covers and fenders – the 2005 Big Dog Pitbull is available in 19 color schemes that includes Misty Purple, Bahama Blue, Brite White, Chrome Yellow, Bright Candy Red and Laser Black. Standard digital instrumentation consists of a speedometer, tachometer, trip odometer, and trip computer. A one-piece leather seat provides enough room for the driver. A halogen headlight and pair of rearview mirrors are in place for increasing visual perception when driving.
Each 2005 Big Dog Ridgeback is 107 inches (2,718.8 mm) in length, with a wheelbase of 82 inches (2,082.8 mm). Ground clearance and seat height are measured at 4 inches (101.6 mm) and 24.5 inches (622.3 mm), respectively. With a dry weight of 654 lbs. (296.7 kilograms), the 2005 Ridgeback has a gross vehicle weight rating of 1,085 inches (492.2 kg).
The 2005 Big Dog Ridgeback shares most of its features or components with one of its model-year counterparts, the Pitbull. However, as a slightly bigger and heavier chopper, the 2005 Ridgeback was geared towards hardcore riders who were not easily intimidated by its seemingly menacing power.
