For the 2005 model year, the aptly named Big Dog Chopper functioned as the mid-level motorcycle from United States manufacturer Big Dog Motorcycles, which would go out of business six year later. With a manufacturer’s suggested retail price of $27,900, the 2005 Chopper was placed above other Big Dog entries from the 2005 model year like the Pitbull, Ridgeback, and Mastiff, with which it shares most of its components or features.
Like virtually all Big Dog motorcycles from the 2005 model year, the Chopper is powered by a four-stroke air-cooled V-twin engine from aftermarket parts manufacturer S&S Cycle. It displaces at 1,916 cubic centimeters, a bore and stroke of 4.13 x 4.38 inches (104.8 x 111.1 millimeters) and a compression ratio of 9.6 to 1. Each engine has a total of eight intake valves, with four going on each of its two cylinders.
Fueled by an S&S Super G carburetor, the engine on the 2005 Big Dog Chopper is paired with a six-speed manual transmission. For fuel, each bike has a gas tank that can hold up to 3.8 gallons (14.4 liters), with a 0.4-gallon (1.5-liter) reserve.
For braking, the 2005 Big Dog Chopper relies on a pair of disc brakes, which is an upgrade from front-disc-brake rear-disc-brake and all-wheel drum set-ups. For its suspension, a 1.6-inch (41-mm) telescopic fork goes to the front, while a twin-sided swing arm with shock absorber is placed at the back. Big Dog installed a 21-inch aluminum wheel at the front and an 18-inch one at the rear; each wheel is wrapped in a tubeless tire.
The 2005 Big Dog Chopper is made of steel, with front and rear fenders, belt guard and side covers completing its frame. Nineteen color schemes – which include Pearl White, Black Cherry Candy, Frost Yellow, Fire Red, Bayou Blue, and Tangelo – exist for the chopper. For seating, Big Dog installed a leather seat, which is big enough for accommodating just the driver.
For standard digital instrumentation, the 2005 Big Dog Chopper provides a tachometer, speedometer, trip odometer, and trip computer. For increasing visibility when driving, Big Dog included a halogen headlight and a pair of side mirrors.
Each 2005 Big Dog Chopper measures 104.1 inches (2,642.6 mm) in length, and it has a wheelbase of 77.5 inches (1,965.5 mm). Its ground clearance and seat height are measured at 4.5 inches (114.3 mm) and 25 inches (635 mm), respectively. The 2005 Chopper, when completely dry, weighs 653 lbs. (296.2 kilograms), and it has a gross vehicle weight rating of 1,085 lbs. (492.2 kg).
