2005 Aprilia Scarabeo

2005 Aprilia Scarabeo 50 Ditech

Intro

The Scarabeo has long been the top-level scooter from now-Piaggio subsidiary Aprilia. For the 2005 model year – around the time when Aprilia was acquired by another Italian manufacturer – the Scarabeo was split into three models: the Scarabeo 50 Ditech, Scarabeo 150 and Scarabeo 500. The manufacturer’s suggested retail price for the 2005 Aprilia Scarabeo was $2,599 for the 50 Ditech, $4,299 for the 150 and $6,999 for the 500.

The numerical suffixes of each 2005 Aprilia Scarabeo correspond with the engine displacement of the respective models. The Scarabeo 50 Ditech has a two-stroke air-cooled unit that displaces at 49.4 cubic centimeters, or cc (rounded up to 50). The engines on the Scarabeo 150 and Scarabeo 500 – both four-stroke liquid-cooled ones – displace at 151 cubic centimeters and 459 cubic centimeters, respectively. Also, the 150cc and 500cc engines have four intake valves, as opposed to the reed valve train used on the 50cc model. The Scarabeo 150 is the only model of the 2005 edition that relies on a carburetor for fueling; the others use the more advanced fuel injection method.

Each engine on the 2005 Aprilia Scarabeo is linked with a Continuously Variable Transmission, or CVT. A type of automatic gearbox, the CVT can choose from an unlimited number of gear ratios to improve engine efficiency and fuel economy. Peak fuel capacity on the 2005 Scarabeo is 2.1 gallons (7.9 liters) on the 50cc, 2.5 gallons (10 liters) on the 150cc and 4.5 gallons (17 liters) on the 500cc.

Each 2005 Aprilia Scarabeo uses all-wheel disc brakes, which makes the scooter have greater stopping power than if it had all-wheel drum brakes or a front-disc-brake rear-drum-brake layout. The suspension on each scooter consists of a telescopic fork and rear shocks, with a single-sided swing arm on the Scarabeo 50 Ditech and a twin-sided one on the other models. Sixteen-inch aluminum wheels go on the 50 Ditech and 150 models; the 500 model rides on smaller wheels (15 inches at the front, 14 inches at the back).

Available as a blue, grey, or white scooter, the 2005 Aprilia Scarabeo uses a sturdy steel frame with a front and rear fender. Hand guards and an upper fairing are added on the Scarabeo 150 and Scarabeo 500. Standard digital instrumentation consists of a trip odometer and speedometer, with a clock added on the 150 and 500. A wind deflector is also added on the upper-level models, along with helmet storage to go with the rear rack and under-seat and lockable compartments.

With a lightweight design, advanced braking and handling prowess, and a variety of models to choose from, the 2005 Aprilia Scarabeo is the absolute best that Aprilia had to offer from its scooter line-up in 2005. The Scarabeo 500 model is particularly recommended to people looking for a more comfort-oriented version of the scooter.
