The 2005 Aprilia RSV 1000 – officially known as the 2005 Aprilia RSV 1000 R – is the second model year of the sport bike from then newly-minted Piaggio subsidiary Aprilia. The bike is available in two models: the regular RSV 1000 R, which had a manufacturer’s suggested retail price of $14,999; and the higher-spec RSV 1000 R Factory, which had an MSRP that was $4,000 higher.
Each 2005 Aprilia RSV 1000 is powered by a four-stroke liquid-cooled V-twin (two-cylinder) engine with a displacement of 997.62 cubic centimeters. Using a double overhead camshaft configuration, it has four intake valves on each cylinder for a total count of eight. Its bore & stroke is 3.82 x 2.66 inches (97 x 67.5 millimeters), and the compression ratio is 11.8 to 1.
The engine on the 2005 Aprilia RSV 1000 is fueled by a 57-millimeter carburetor. It is paired with a six-speed manual transmission. Fuel capacity is measured on each bike at 4.8 gallons (18 liters), with a reserve of 1.1 gallons (4 liters).
Each 2005 Aprilia RSV 1000 has a pair of Brembo® disc brakes. They consist of a 12.6-inch (320-mm) dual disc at the front; and a smaller, 8.7-inch (220-mm) single disc at the back. This enables the bike to stop more effectively than if it had all-wheel drum brakes or a front disc brake and rear drum brake. The suspension of the 2005 RSV 1000 consists of a 1.7-inch (43-mm) inverted fork and a rear shock with a twin-sided aluminum swing arm at the back. The regular RSV 1000 goes with a front Showa and rear Sachs Boge suspension, while the Factory uses an upgraded Ohlins® suspension. Each 2005 RSV 1000 has huge 17-inch aluminum wheels wrapped in tubeless tires; the wheels on the Factory model is blue anodized forged.
The 2005 Aprilia RSV 1000 uses an aluminum frame for reducing weight while maintaining its solid feel. The frame covering or adornment – plastic on the RSV 1000 R and carbon fiber on the RSV 1000 R Factory – consists of the front and rear fenders, full fairing, fork guards, and a spoiler for aerodynamics. A two-piece detachable vinyl seat on the bike provides enough room for the driver and a passenger.
Digital instrumentation on each 2005 Aprilia RSV 1000 consists of a clock, tachometer, trip odometer, lap timer, shift light, speedometer, service reminder indicator, and fuel level and temperature warning gauge. A windshield prevents wind or debris from bothering the occupants, and an engine immobilizer functions as the bike’s security system. A halogen headlight and a pair of rearview mirrors provide the driver with greater visual perception on the road.
Each 2005 Aprilia RSV 1000 has a length of 80.2 inches (2,036.1 mm), width of 28.8 inches (730 mm), height of 45.1 inches (1,145 mm), and wheelbase of 55.8 (1,418 mm). It also has a seat height of 31.9 inches (810 mm). However, the regular variant has a dry weight of 417 lbs. (189.2 kilograms), while the Factory model is lighter, at 408 lbs. (185 kg).
With a large and powerful engine, superb stopping power and handling, fine fit and finish, and considerable driving range, the 2005 Aprilia RSV 1000 is a particularly good choice for sports enthusiasts or riders looking for excitement in their bikes. The Factory edition, with its reasonable number of enhancements, is the obvious choice for the best the 2005 RSV 1000 has to offer.
