The Aprilia SR DiTech 50 is a good entry-level motor scooter that can be upgraded once the rider gains experience. The 50 base model is limited to a top speed of 30 mph, which means that, depending on which state they live in, riders may not need a motorcycle license to ride it on city streets. Once the beginner feels comfortable riding it, the engine can be derestricted or upgraded, with an optional kit, to handle speeds of 60 mph to 68 mph. The scooter can be ridden on highways at these speeds, but prudent riders will stay off the freeways. Most 49 cc scooters top out at 40 mph or so, but Aprilia began using a DiTech engine in its 50 scooters beginning with the 2003 model year. Aprilia used the DiTech engines for the first time in its 50 motor scooters. The DiTech engine allows for improved performance as well as reduced consumption of fuel and oil. The engine uses 60 percent less oil. Though no official gas mileage estimates are available, indications are that riders should be able to get 90 mpg to 120 mpg with the upgraded engine.
The Aprilia SR DiTech 50 has a sporty, almost racing look. It offers a comfortable ride, whether around town or long distance, and is easy to maintain. Reviewers also note the scooter is easy to handle and gets off to a quick start. The scooter is built to only carry a rider. Under-seat storage has room for a full-face helmet. Aprilia offered the SR DiTech 50 in blue and red in 2004. Instrumentation includes the basic speedometer and a trip odometer.
